I'm very glad that 2 weeks ago Google announced that it will be creating Street View for South Africa, to be launched before 2010 (Soccer World Cup to be hosted in SA in 2010). This will create a huge interest in virtual panoramic photography in South Africa, and give the industry a boost (as you explained).
