This fortress protecting the harbor was originally an island used as the main entry point for Spanish newcomers to Mexico. The central part was a an inhumane prison during the Porfirio Diaz regime.

Zocalo in Veracruz is also called Plaza de Armas and PLaza Lerdo - framed from three sides with arcades of 17th-century Palacio Municipal the 18th-century catedral. In the evening the zocalo becomes full of music, entertainers and bystanders.
