Paint Your Mexican Stone Panel Experiment: Day 2

This post contains only a small portion of the images. You can find more images

(more images will be added there in upcoming days)

Yesterday I shared a post in which I started an experiment with painting a photo of a carved stone from El Tajin, Mexico. I thought that it would be interesting to see the photo painted with various colors.

When my friend Ivan saw the post he immediately asked me for the original picture so he could make his own painting. I updated the post then and made the source file available for anybody to download so they could make their own version of the painting. When Ivan sent the result to me he also asked if I have more pictures like that - that he liked painting it a lot.

It turns out that I do have quite a lot of those images from my trip to Mexico, Belize and Guatemala in 2008. At that time I was just taking snapshots of steles, stones, portals and various building parts with no specific purpose in mind. I didn’t even know what to do with those pictures because I didn’t want to share them - I thought they were not interesting enough without lots of background information to be shared along with them, e.g. at least what’s on them - which I didn’t know.

Today though, the day has come to put them to use! I’ll be sharing these photos in full 100% quality in my facebook and google+ albums so you can download them and create your own creations.

Here’s what you should do to participate:

1. Download the full resolution image either from the facebook or google+ album
2. Paint the stones with your colors and style
3. Share the result!

Make sure you mention or tag me in your posts so I get notified and so I can see, comment and reshare your posts.

Paint Your Mexican Panel Experiment: Day 1
Panel showing ballplayer being beheaded — El Tajin, Mexico
Work in progress coloring, step 1. The original photo is just a stone carved texture, no colors. The colors were added to me later to make the theme stand out more. I think it makes the photo more interesting. Do you agree? Would you like to see the painting finished? If yes, do you have any comments, suggestions, ideas? Let me know! :)
Update: If you want to try your own coloring you can! Here’s the original tiff file with layers and here’s the clean jpeg for the experiment file with 100% quality and no colors.  If you make any creations using this photo I’ll post here on this blog it so definitely let me know! Please link back to this article.
Update September 27: The experiment continues! Please read the story update in this post which includes links to my facebook and google+ albums with much more images you can paint! They are always uploaded with 100% quality and resolution.
