Why You Might Want To Move Your Blog from WordPress.com to WordPress.org (And What It Means)

Posted by – May 31, 2009

For those of you who don’t know there are two versions of the great WordPress blogging software. WordPress.com and WordPress.org. Both are free. The difference is that the com version is hosted on wordpress servers while you need to host the org version yourself. I’ve recently moved to the org version and here’s why.

Com version is very easy to setup, you don’t have to worry about backups, upgrades, server setup, hosting, you get SSL login to the admin section etc. On the other hand it’s customization is limited, you cannot install new themes, you cannot insert javascript or flash into pages or modify the html code. They also offer a fee-basedVIP version for high-traffic sites which is more customizable.

Org version needs to be downloaded and hosted on your server, you can upload new plugins, themes and customize everything. The cons are that you need to have your own web host, handle backups and maintain the server yourself (some technical knowledge is needed). For more information, check out the WordPress “com vs org” support article.

The com version I’m going to use from now on allows me to:

1. Use Google Analytics and itsert its tracking code into pages

2. Embed flash files like youtube vieo, pano viewers, etc.

3. Insert any javascript code into pages, e.g. Twitter updates

4. Switch to any theme I want

5. Use any plugin I want (check out the Top 18 most downloaded WordPress plugins ever)

Which version do YOU use and why?
